Dr. Brooke Zumas
Hailing from one of wrestling’s greatest national hotbeds, the Lehigh Valley, Brooke grew up heavily involved in the sport but without direct opportunities to participate. Over the years, she has served in various roles across many levels of the sport. As a photographer for Lehigh University and the Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club, Brooke earned the National Wrestling Media Association’s 2012 Photographer of the Year award and, in 2014, transitioned to coaching where she helped lead an inner-city co-ed youth team for 5 years - the first Beat the Streets affiliated team in the Lehigh Valley. Brooke has also undertaken leadership positions to help drive grassroots efforts to increase involvement in the sport, including through the Executive Committee of the Lehigh Wrestling Club, the National Advisory Council for Wrestle Like a Girl, and the SanctionPA Task Force which aims to get girls wrestling sanctioned in Pennsylvania. Brooke currently coaches freestyle and Greco in the spring and, during the regular season, is an assistant coach at Parkland High School where they have the largest girls’ roster in the state of Pennsylvania. In her professional work, Brooke has conducted research at the United States Air Force Academy regarding athletes’ sleep duration and performance and currently provides training to Pennsylvania schools to form Concussion Management Teams with the goal of assisting student-athletes in their return-to-learn process.
Brooke graduated summa cum laude from Lehigh University in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Earning her Doctoral degree in Psychology from Rutgers University in 2014, Brooke’s dissertation focused on how to expand universal wellness opportunities for youth. She currently works as a School Psychologist, Licensed Psychologist, and Educational Consultant and is passionate about improving opportunities for under-served populations. Brooke serves as Board Vice-President for a special needs children’s foundation and leads a local coalition to provide inner-city children with expanded experiences outside of the city limits. In her spare time, Brooke is a Disaster Mental Health Responder for the Red Cross, teaches at the collegiate level, and enjoys visiting National Parks, as she works toward her goal of hiking every National Park in the United States.
